An 'X' against evil Original Coat of Arms (Wapenschild) of Amsterdam, here, on a facade. The X-shape in the Amsterdam flag and Coat of Arms is a common symbol. Here are my last thoughts and reflections as well as a summary of my brief time here in this fabulous city.

Underneath is the city's motto, Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig, which means Valiant, Steadfast, Compassionate. Two golden lions adorn the sides, and the Imperial Crown of Austria sits atop the shield. Speaking of the flag, it features three horizontal stripes in red, black, and red. The black one is thinner and has three white Xs on it.

The motto underneath is 'Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig' (Heroic, Determined, Merciful). The late Queen Wilhelmina granted the city the right to use this motto in 1947 in recognition of the behaviour of Amsterdam's population during the German occupation in the Second World War.

More recent versions of the crest bear the Dutch words "Heldhaftig, Vastberaden, Barmhartig" which means "Heroic, Steadfast, Compassionate". These were added in 1947 at the request of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands to mark the people's protest against the Nazi persecution of the Amsterdam's Jews during the war.
